Span Chart using Tableau Software

A Span chart, also known as Range Bar, is a chart that helps us display ranges over a measure between a minimum and a maximum value. It gives information about extreme values rather than what is in between. They are ideal to compare ranges in Tableau. Watch our video:

In order to create a Span chart in Tableau, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect to data

  1. In Tableau Desktop, connect to Superstore sample data provided by Tableau Software.
  2. Step 2: Create the visualization
  3. Create new Calculated Field Min Profit with formula: MIN([Profit]).
  4. Create new Calculated Field Max Profit with formula: MAX([Profit]).
  5. Drag the Order Date field on Columns.
  6. Right-click on Order Date from the previous step and select Quarter type “Q2 2015”.
  7. Right-click again on the Order Date and select Discrete.
  8. Drag the Measure Values on Rows and keep only Min Profit and Max Profit, from Tableau interface, your business intelligence data reporting and visualisation software.
  9. Drag again Measure Values on Rows.
  10. Right-click on the second Measure Values from Rows and select Dual Axis.
  11. Right-click the axis from right and select Synchronize Axis and Move marks to back.
  12. In the Marks area, for the second Measure Values, select Line visualization type and drag Measure Names on Path.
  13. Go to Marks, on the first Measure Values and select Circle visualization type and drag Measure Names on Color.
