We all know that the Roman Empire was one of the most powerful and greatest civilizations that existed in the history of our humanity. Throughout its existence, the Roman Empire subordinated its many territories which subsequently became national states in Europe, Africa and Asia.
But how many of us know that on April 21, year 753 BC was founded the city of Rome, the place where the great Roman Empire was born? More than likely we all heard the legend of Romulus and Remus, the two twins of Mars. The traditional story says that they were abandoned on the banks of a river where they were found by a wolf. She fed them until they were found by the Faustus pastor and his wife. The two brothers grew up in the middle of their family until adulthood. Later, Romulus and Remus found out their origin and decided to take down the one who ordered their death. Unfortunately, historical data does not provide a clear view on Remus’s death. There are several opinions that say he was killed in a battle by his brother or that he died from the disease.
However, Romulus is believed to be the founder of the ancient city of Rome, on April 21, 753 BC. He is also declared to be the first king of the city. During his reign he divided the population into 3 tribes: Ramnes, Titienses and Luceres and established the Roman Senate with the purpose of collecting taxes and forming military groups. Members of the senate were named the fathers of the city (known as patres), becoming one of the great social classes of Rome.
Romulus’ reign is also known for the social protection offered to slaves and fugitives who were seeking Roman citizenship. Even though the legend of King Romulus is somewhat controversial, it is important to know that he was the founder of the city of Rome and the one who set the tone for the great conquests that the Roman Empire acquired.
