Pareto Chart View Distribution

The Pareto principle uses the 80/20 rule, meaning that 20% of the production generates 80% of the result. Vilfredo Pareto found that 80% of the wealth is owned by 20% of the population. Pareto Chart represents the view of this distribution and can help us to see which products generate the highest sales or revenue.

To complete this type of chart, please follow these steps:

 

Step 1: Connect to the data

  1. In Tableau Desktop, connect to the Global Superstore sample data provided by Tableau, data visualization software for large data companies.

 

Step 2: Create a First Calculated Table

  1. Drag the Product ID to the Column.
  2. Drag Sales to Rows.
  3. Right click on Sales and create a Table Calculation and select Running Total.
  4. Click Edit Table Calculation.
  5. Click Specific Dimensions.
  6. Select “Add secondary calculation” and select Percent of Total.

 

Step 3: Create the Second Calculated Table

  1. Sort descending Product ID
  2. Select Fit With
  3. Hold down CTRL and drag the Product ID field to Detail.
  4. Right-click Product ID and create a Table Calculation and select Running Total.
  5. Click Edit Table Calculation.
  6. Click Specific Dimensions.
  7. Select “Add secondary calculation” and select Percent of Total, using Tableau, business intelligence and big data visualization software.

 

Step 4: Create the View

  1. Bring Sales on Rows and create a Dual Axis
  2. Right-click the Header on the right and select Move marks to back
  3. Hide the Header.
