In this Skillpill, you will learn how to use Tableau Prep to organize, clean, and transform your data to be further used in analysis and visualizations.
Data comes in all shapes and sizes, especially of different quality, which sometimes proves challenging. Imagine you must work with survey results whose questions are populated horizontally along the table, or you encounter duplicate rows or misspelled values. Tableau Prep can help organize, clean, and transform your data for further analysis and visualization.
→ In Tableau Prep Builder, connect to Sample – Global Superstore data provided by Tableau.
→ Drag and drop the Orders tab onto the flow pane
→ Add a clean step and start cleaning your data:
Use Group Values by Spelling to correct the misspelled entries from the EMEA Market column;
Remove the unneeded Discount and Profit columns by selecting them and clicking “Remove column”;
Split the Customer ID column by using Automatic Split Values;
Change the City Column data role to a Geographic City Role.
→ Drag and drop the Returns tab onto the flow pane
→ Add a clean step to look over the individual month columns, select all the month columns
→ Add a pivot step to switch the columns into the Return Date column and Return quantity new columns
→ Add an output step to give the possibility to export your clean data to a local file, Tableau published data source or write the information in a database
