Highlight Row and Column in Tableau Software

Highlighting a row and a column is helping every end user of any text table to focus better on the value selected for that specific row and column. Watch our video.

 

In order to create a Highlight on Row and Column in Tableau, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Connect to data

  1. In Tableau Desktop, connect to Superstore sample data provided by Tableau Software.
  2. Step 2: Create the visualization
  3. Create a Set on Sub-Category filed, named Sub-Category Set and select one random sub-category.
  4. Create a Set on State filed, named State Set and select one random state.
  5. Drag State field on Filters. Go to Top -> By field: and select Top 15 by Profit. Make sure the aggregation is on Sum.
  6. Drag State field on Columns.
  7. Drag Sub-Category field on Rows, using Tableau Software interface, big data analytics software.
  8. Create a new Calculated field named Highlight with the formula: IF [State Set] or [Sub-Category Set] then 1 else 0 END.
  9. Drag the Profit field on Label from Marks
  10. In the Marks area, select the Square
  11. Drag the Highlight field on Color from Marks
  12. Click on Color from Marks area and select Edit Colors. Select Palette Custom Diverging, check Stepped Color and select 2 Steps. Click on Advanced and select Start 0 and End The left color should be white and the right one, any color you want.
  13. Right-click on State on the Filters area and select Add to Context.
  14. Create a new dashboard and drag the sheet on it, from Tableau Desktop, business intelligence software.
  15. Go to Dashboard -> Actions -> Add Action -> Change Set Values -> Name it State Set. Select the Run action on Hover, select the Target Set to be State Set and check the Clearing the selection willRemove all values from set”.
  16. Go to Dashboard -> Actions -> Add Action -> Change Set Values -> Name it Sub-Category Set. Select the Run action on Hover, select the Target Set to be Sub-Category Set and check the Clearing the selection willRemove all values from set”.
